We are so fortunate to have been asked to do the hair and make up for the 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. We got the call 10 days before the event and were asked if we could pull together a team of 10 for this event. I said ” I will try” with such short notice, I gathered my Creative Team together, ran it by them and prayed for a ~yes~…Not only did I get a ‘yes’, I got a ‘hell yeah’! I have the most amazing team in the industry.
They were all so excited to embark on this journey together. We booked our flights to Vegas, leaving at 8:30 a.m. and to return at 11:00 p.m. O.K. game on! We land in Vegas and get picked up in style by a huge Limo…pull up to the Hilton to see the red carpet being rolled out. (not for us 
but one can dream~ We went from our pre-production meeting, to the Hair and Make up rooms, then off to stage right and stage left. There were stars swarming the place. It was very exciting to see some old timers such as Tony Orlando (what a sweetie), Chubby Checker (he serenaded us in our make up room, so cool) and the Spinners.
This Emmy Award Program was also a tribute to Dick Clark. So the people that were on American Bandstand early on, performed this particular evening. There were satellite appearances by Cher, Simon Cowell, Garth Brooks and Barry Manilow to name a few. Marie Osmond, Susan Lucci, Regis Philbin, Ryan Seacrest, David Copperfield were a few of the stars that touched the evening (and we touched them …oh, don’t let me forget the Blue Men Group.

Shiny, Frizz-Free, Smooth, Beautiful Hair Anyone?

Photo Shoot preparations!
The photo shoot is just 2 weeks away and the preparations are all coming together!
I am proud to say the team and I have completed a collection of cuts and colour that we can’t wait to share!
Our journey started with inspiration boards at the beginning of this year, followed by many hours of cutting, colouring and styling out mannequin heads…..when we were finally happy with our looks, the make up team were
on-board to start their process.
We have some gorgeous models and an amazing photographer “Gary Lions” that will make our vision real!
Gordana Gelhausen the fashion designer from Project Runway and owner of Goga by Gordana has been generous enough to allow us to use her designs to enhance our collection.
So we are finally coming to the end of the long list I created last year!
Over the next 2 weeks my team and I will be finishing up the last minute details and practising our style outs to make this shoot as smooth as possible!

New York – The city that never sleeps!
My grueling Saturday schedule is over and I’m, catching the red eye to NYC!
I have to admit my energy level is low and I’m wondering how I’m going to get inspired… this worry is soon put to rest, a 10 minute walk on the streets of Soho immediately gets my head buzzing and my energy is back!
I am surrounded by amazing architecture, style and fashion – this is just what I needed!
The Aveda academy is full of inspiration and just being there gets me excited – here’s a little taste of the photo shoot!
My model, Lisa Ramos is absolutely gorgeous, she walks in and I snap her up. The hair transformation takes place.
Step 1.) Lisa’s hair is naturally very sleek and for the look I wish to create I need a lot of volume.
Step 2.) Prepare the hair with Aveda Damage control for thermal protection, Volumizing tonic for root lift and Confixor for hold and shine.
Step 3.) Tin foil was randomly rolled into different widths and shapes and I wrap the hair around the foil to create zig zags and coils.
Step 4.) The top section I wish to create a finger waved look, I use the flat iron for this too and clip while the hair is cooling.
Step 5.) Carefully unravel the hair from the foil. My vision for Lisa is a 70’s inspired fusion of textures and volume, so I already know I’m going to be dressing the hair further by using my combs and brushes to change the set into an electrified texture.
At this point we are ready to shoot, Lisa is an experienced model and immediately gets into character and does her thing! My job from here on out is easy, a few pins here and there to change the shape and the shoot is done! WOW what a day!!
Next our Spring/Summer Collection….

Each season the creative artists throughout the hair industry flex their muscles and design the next collection of haircuts to be worn by the models, the fashionista’s and finally the client.
It’s always an interesting question when I’m asked “whats your prediction for the next big hair trend” …yes its true we have seen some iconic hairstyles over the decades, more recently the likes of Jennifer Anniston and Victoria Beckham! As a hairdresser I for one am ecstatic this trend is coming to an end, finally the % of posh spice requests is in single digits and hopefully we will be seeing more precision and polished looks leaving our salons!
So what is the next prediction? Obviously depending on lifestyle and location not every client will be requesting a futuristic space age cut and colour but I definitely feel a change toward a more sculpted geometric shape, this can then be tailored to the individual depending on their maintenance needs.
I love the new collections from Vidal Sassoon, Mark Hayes, international Director has taken his collection of Dada Dolls to the extreme! His dramatic interpretation of bold disconnection and precision shapes are absolutely amazing!!!
Antoinette Beenders from Aveda has also pushed the envelope with her collection of Punky goth. The translation of texture is surreal!!
These two hair masters have taken hair and made pure art!!! I love their vision and the execution is flawless!!
Will the average client request these looks?….probably not this season but we will definitely be seeing some variations!

Feeling the Pinch?
As our economic climate continues to waver, at times we feel
the ‘pinch’ is on. Whether it is emotional, financial or physical, we
ask ourselves, ‘what’s important’? And if looking and feeling good
is one of your answers, you’re not alone. Lets face it; hair, skin and
make up are quintessential accessories. Small, inexpensive
changes make a world of difference. When we feel great, we
look better. Looking beautiful is more than just an exterior fix, it is
and internal journey.
5 Tips on looking and feeling your best: Beauty on a Budget
1. Your hair is your best accessory. Your hair-style is not a life-sentence. It is your god-given right to change it up. Look
through magazines, talk to your stylist and make one change
with your hair. Be it colour, cut or just styling it entirely
different. Make that change! This will renew and inspire a
new attitude.
2. Your skin ~ remember, great skin = great make up. You
want to enhance your beauty, not cover it up. Make sure
your skin is glowing from beneath your make up. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have great skin. A cleanse,
tone and moisturize, both in the morning and evening are
your basic ‘must do’s’. Now mix it up with a ‘treatment’
product based on your skin type. If you have sun damage,
pick up a brightening product. If you have fine lines, pick up
and anti-aging serum. No matter what your skin type or age, an eye cream is a ‘must have’, as this is the only skin on the body that doesn’t moisturize itself. Good-bye crow’s feet!
3. Your make up ~ With that new hair style you will want to
change your make up. BTW, make up was meant to be
changed. That’s why cosmetic companies change the colors
so frequently. Your make up pallet should updated with
the change in seasons and any hair colour change. Afraid of the make-up counters? Save some money by investing in a ‘lip tint’ instead of a ‘lip stick’. It not only costs less, it will provide great moisture and
SPF-15. Pucker up…
4. Your body ~ Sometimes we focus so much on our face. It is
the first thing we look at in the morning, we forget to
continue down to the rest of our body. Don’t neglect
yourself. That is where the majority of your skin lives. Treat
yourself to a exfoliating treatment in the shower…My
personal favorite is the Caribbean Therapy Scrub…This is a
sea salt and sugar scrub with amazing oils. The aroma will
melt your heart and the combination will soften your skin. This costs a fraction of any professional spa service.
You will not be disappointed with this one!
5. Your mind ~ Give yourself an emotional ‘face lift’. Take 5
minutes of your morning, create a quiet space, light a candle
and take some deep cleansing breaths. Clear your mind of
any negativity and on your exhale, let it go. On your inhale,
visualize your favorite color filling your body and spirit.
Repeat this for 5 minutes, fill your day with your desired
intention, then watch the magic happen… And this is FREE!

The Creative Team kicked off 2010 at a fast pace. In January, the design team predicts precision looks with a mixture of textures ~ You will see some “Geo” shapes (geometric) that will blow your socks off!
Above all the hair and make up for our spring and summer collection are “Bronzy & Hot”. February and March are filled with creative energy and change is in the air. I am off to an exciting ‘editorial’ class in New York with Aveda. From this class, we will be bringing new trends to our creative team for inspiration for our next photo shoot in April.
I would like to welcome our newest members to the creative team ~ Your inspiration boards and models were gorgeous! Well done. I know alot of hard work went into your presentations!
